WTS Transportation YOU DC Summit

July 20, 2017

WTS – Inland Empire had the opportunity to participate in the largest Transportation YOU DC Youth Summit, a conference designed to inspire students to pursue a career in transportation. Two of the scholarship recipients, Ana Sofia Gonzalez Diaz and Charlotte Mourad together with their mentors Rachel Yazawa and Jannet Loera Gutierrez participated in the sixth annual summit. During this intensive four day program, the students had the opportunity to meet successful professional women in transportation and learn about the exciting careers in transportation.

The program began on Wednesday, June 21st with a meet and greet dinner at the Omni Shoreham Hotel. The next day, the group visited the U.S. Department of Transportation to learn about the different modes of transportation, the National Transportation Safety Board (NSTB) where they learned about the department’s investigations on aerial accidents, and the Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center where they toured the Federal Outdoor Impact Laboratory, Saxon Transportation Operations Laboratory, Hydraulics Laboratory, Concrete Laboratory, and Human Factors Laboratory. Later that night the group had the opportunity to get a tour of the Washington Monuments.

On Friday, the group toured the Capitol and Union Station, and then headed to the National Academy of Sciences Facility where the students had the opportunity to work on their challenge project which consisted of creating a safer route to school. The day finished off with a dinner cruise on the Potomac.

On Saturday, the girls finished their challenge project and presented it at George Washington University. After their presentation, there was a college information panel discussion, and concluded the day with a banquet dinner at Lebanese Taverna.

The last day of the conference, the students were presented with their graduation certificates from Diane Woodend Jones, WTS International Chair. The whole conference was definitely a lifetime experience for both the students and the mentors.
