WTS IE Partners with Girl Scouts

February 20, 2018

On February 13th, 2018, during National Engineers Week, the Women's Transportation Seminar of Inland Empire (WTS-IE) joined the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio, San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), Omnitrans, and Metrolink to host the Classroom to Career visit with over 100 Girl Scouts from throughout San Bernardino County.

The day long visit began at the San Bernardino Transit Center where Omnitrans provided a tour of the facility and demonstrated how to ride the train.  The group then boarded the train for a short ride to the Santa Fe Depot. For many of the girls, it was their first time riding the train! Once they arrived to the Santa Fe Depot, the girls took a guided tour of the Rail Museum provided by SBCTA. They learned about the history of the Colton Crossing and the importance of the transportation network. The group also participated in two hands-on activities that allowed them to envision and create what the future of transportation may look like as well as how to design their own freeway interchanges. Afterwards, the girls were able to talk with various women in the transportation field, from planning and design to construction, operation, and maintenance, and learned about the the different kinds of careers they may pursue in their future.

The Classroom to Career initiative developed by the Girl Scouts exposes junior high school girls to STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) related businesses throughout Southern California.  WTS-IE and its Transportation YOU Committee created a partnership with the Girl Scouts to expand opportunities for girls in the program.

"It was great to see these girls learning about the different aspects of transportation. They asked very thoughtful questions during the tours and it was amazing to see how creative they got during the activities."

Kristine Macalma, WTS-IE STEM/RUSD Chair

"It was awesome to show the girls that women are able to pursue a career in the STEM field! I'm excited to see this program expand and reach out to more young women."
Rachel Yazawa, WTS-IE Transportation YOU Chair
